Greetings and Salutations,

Well, another intense training week. A big effort from everyone. Respect.

This week is a smorgasbord of traditional drills. Seniors will be concentrating on Chum Kil, Bil Jee, Wooden Dummy and Chi Sau. Blues will be detailing the second half of Sil Lum Tao and trapping hands. White belts will be foundation essentials… see you on the mat.

As some of you may have heard, Andrew will no longer be teaching the lunchtime BJJ class. This is a decision he does not take lightly, so I would like to take this opportunity to share some of your BJJ history.

At the 1996 Martial Arts Hall of Fame Awards I was hanging out with John Will and he was really pumped about how BJJ was going to change the landscape of martial arts in Australia. He said “Rick, you should really think about integrating it into your system.”

So John came up and did an amazing seminar, and that was that. We were hooked. We didn’t have mats at the time but we dove in and the rest is history. And a big part of that history is Andrew.

The two of us rolled and rolled and rolled. We both knew how important this discipline was for strengthening our Wing Chun and the future of our system. I may have brought BJJ to our mat, but Andrew has consolidated it. When I could not continue teaching due to injuries, Andrew took up the slack and forged ahead so we never lost momentum.

I am forever grateful for that and countless owe him a huge thanks for the BJJ skills they possess today.

So once again, thank you old friend, for all your contributions, coming in on Thursdays regardless of numbers and giving your best. I personally look forward to some Sunday sessions with you when my body is able. You’re simply tops in my book.

Much love and respect,
Sifu

BRAZILIAN JIU JUTSU IN SYDNEY

Red Boat Kung Fu integrated BJJ into our Wing Chun fighting system in 1998.

BJJ in a Kung Fu school?

Yes. If you live in Sydney and want to train in a fun and friendly environment where you learn skills that will not only help you in self defence, but in the discipline of everyday life, then look no further.

You can learn BJJ, you can learn Wing Chun, you can learn both.

They are run as two seperate curriculums – meaning you are assessed and awarded belts in each discipline independant from each other – but there are no membership restrictions in how you train and what you train in.

Wing Chun and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu have been a perfect marriage – the skills learnt in Wing Chun have meant an smooth transition to BJJ – and for us the combination of the two have meant an interesting adaptation for both arts respectively.

We are open for classes 7 days a week. If you want to train in BJJ here at Redfern, we practice on Thursday and Sundays.

Enquire today to book a trial!

Hi guys!

Tonight’s BJJ class will start with a Yoga warm up, then grading practice for white, blue and purple belts, finishing with flow rolling (sticking with the same partner).

Tomorrow’s Kung Fu lunch class with Sifu will be working on hand speed development.

Finally tomorrow night’s Wing Chun with Vadim at 6:30pm will be working on trapping hands flow drills and looking at split blocks application in combat.

See you on the mat.

PS: People are already booking for Peak Performance so be sure to register! Go to our EVENTS page at redboatkungfu.com to pay/enroll.

Lunch class BJJ at 12:15 with Andrew is continuing the theme of fundamentals revision.

Tonight BJJ at 6pm is the final stages of blue and purple belt grading practice loops. Introduction to 2nd loop for your belt level. Finishing with flow rolling. No partner changes etc.

Hi guys,

Thank you for a fantastic turnout and great class on Saturday! We covered how to deliver a perfect side kick and understanding trapping hands – including how it is REALLY used in combat.

Sunday BJJ was a great turnout also, we covered essential foundation skills and drills with some light rolling to finish.

Today’s 12:15 lunch class with Zac will include Saturday’s lesson themes with the addition of sparring essentials.

Tonights 6pm with Sifu is good old fashioned forms, chi sau and hand sparring.

7:15pm with Mayur is flow drill, touch reflex drills with kicking combination and some light sparring to finish.

Today’s classes are 12:15 and 6pm BJJ don’t miss them! Adult contact sports, as of yesterday, are amongst the approved activities in NSW restriction criteria. That being the case, still remember to maintain high levels of personal hygiene.

Tonight’s class is working on grading flow drills for blue and purple belts, finishing with flow rolling – 4x 3min rounds. Andrew’s plan for BJJ is also working on foundations, so make it in one way or another!

The last Kids Kung Fu class for this term is this Saturday. Please parents, it’s “pay as you go” for what has been the remainder of this term. Usually $18 per class, but given the current circumstances we have reduced it to $10 per class for this term. Please pay at front desk to Sifu Rick, cash is preferred unless you are paying an accrued amount. Next term a discount of 30% will be allocated to all children’s Term payments to offset the forced shut down of classes in term one (for existing members only).

See you on the mat.
