Wing Chun Kung Fu: The Evolution of a Mixed Martial Art

Some people might be surprised to know that Wing Chun Kung Fu was actually designed as a mixed martial art. However, in most strains it got frozen in time and never really evolved. That is, until now. We have continued to evolve Wing Chun as a fighting art, that is competitive amongst modern systems of today. While Bruce Lee did draw on other systems of fighting, he didn’t seem to fully understand the traditional aspects of the Wing Chun system, like forms for example. His argument was that you don’t fight that way. But that’s not their purpose – forms are not meant to translate into real world fighting scenarios. And we’ve seen how successful our system can be against other modern styles in competition! So if you’re looking for an edge in today’s world of martial arts, Wing Chun is the way to go.

Our Wing Chun at Red Boat Kung Fu is a system that has continued to evolve over time, and we are excited to invite you to come and try it out. Our school offers trial classes so that you can explore the art before making a commitment. We believe in the system and the community it provides, and we hope you will too. If you have any questions about Wing Chun or our school, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Thank you for your time, and we hope to see you soon!

Hi guys,

Final week of the kicking theme this week, so you should be seeing combos, rebounders, change-ups and spinning kicks in the Wing Chun classes throughout the week.

This Saturday is the Junior’s Grading – now at the end of every term – which starts at their usual class time of 11:15 am but should run for approximately 90mins.

Sunday is Sifu’s Never be a Victim Seminar on the psychology of self defence. A must for everyone. Self defence is very different to sparring and fighting.

Finally, parents remember to book for the juniors school holiday program! It’s only a week away.

See you on the mat.

Morning guys,

With all the chaos and craziness in the world right now, it is even more important to have that third place.

Between work and home it is the space in-between. The space and place that is yours, where you go to recharge, where you go to let off steam, where you go to work on you.

For whatever reason you some of you may have started your martial journey – it may have been self defence, dream fulfilment, curiosity, fitness, socialising, skill development – for most of you, the school becomes your third place.

It’s here that you find balance and keep your mind and spirit in check, so that you can carry out your day to day in harmony.

So, remember to make that time, no matter what is going on, to invest in your own peace and sanity. It’s one hour out of your day that is yours, make it happen!

See you on the mat.

Morning all!

It’s been a great week of training so far.

This week and the next, we are focusing on our kicks in the Wing Chun classes. Not just the correctness of technique in terms of kicking, but all you need to support this skill – strength, flexibility, footwork, co-ordination, speed and accuracy.

Chi Sau, Forms and Dummy will still be practised, just on the periphery while we build our kicking skills up.

BJJ grading is on the horizon! Keep an eye out for the date but start prepping now. It will most likely be around the Wing Chun belt grading scheduled for May.

On that note this Thursday’s 6pm BJJ class is all about your grading prep.

So get in tonight for kicking, sparring and Wing Chun foundations. Tomorrow for BJJ grading prac and Boxing foundations.

See you on the mat.

Morning all!

We are continuing with the kicking theme this week, working on all aspects that make your kicks great and we’ll start putting together kicking combos.

Sifu returned from Ipswich in great spirits, you can expect a mat chat from him this morning. He may have already streamed it by the time you get this! But you can find it here: https://bit.ly/3snFOKe

Next Saturday (9th April) is the Juniors grading at 11.15am. Friends and family are welcome to watch and support the kids in their kung fu journey! They truly are inspiring.

This Easter school holidays we are running a kids program on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11am to 4pm. For enrolments please contact Amy, reply to this email or book via Facebook https://bit.ly/3NkYbKS or our timetable https://bit.ly/36M9Am3

Finally, on the Sunday 10th April from 11am, Sifu is hosting the Never be a Victim workshop, it’s $70 per person and friends/family are welcome. This is a 2 hour seminar/workshop.

Everyone who trained, coached and assisted over the weekend, you are amazing, thank you!

See you on the mat,

Dear parents and guardians,

The new curriculum is now ready to download. Please follow this link https://bit.ly/3NmsfWE  it will take you to a page on our site where you can download your child’s grading material.

If your child is training twice a week or more they are most likely ready to grade. If they have only been training once a week they may need to wait for the next grading at the end of next term. But we do assess this on a child by child basis, so please contact Amy at info@redboatkungfu.com if you are unsure of what to expect.

Otherwise we have been preparing your children for all that is in the updated curriculum and will continue with their grading preparation during the coming weeks.

See you on the mat!

Hi guys,

Drawing a little inspiration from Sifu’s latest vid of his kicks 12 months after his hip resurfacing, we are spending the next couple of weeks working on our kicks – not at the expense of everything else but this theme will play a significant role in all Wing Chun classes.

You can expect to stretch, condition, drill for targeting, acuracy and speed. For the kicks themselves we will work on your singles, then combos, then look at more advanced concepts like change-ups and spinning kicks.

Traditionalists, you’ll still get your forms, wooden dummy and chi sau. Fitness fanatics, you’ll still get your workouts.

Enjoy the ride.

See you on the mat.

Never Be A Victim – A Seminar – Sunday 10th April 11am (2hrs)

We train for many reasons: health & wellbeing, fitness, combat skills, comradery, goal & dream fulfilment, all of which are completely legit reasons to train. The problem we have is, none of those reasons tackle the most important reason and that is the ability to survive a full-on attack on the street.

Martial arts has little to do with self defence. I know that sounds weird, but unfortunately it’s true. Everything changes on the street. There are no mats, just concrete. No referee, you’re on your own. No fair play, no rules, no tapping out. Just survival of the smartest and most adaptable.

As many of you know, my past life involved protecting some of Australia’s most dangerous criminals. That experience altered my viewpoint on survival on the street forever.

This seminar has been 40 years in the making. On this day we will cover not only physical and environmental tactics, but the all-important psychological elements of your self-defence so that you never become a victim on the street, in your car, in isolated areas.

Learn to be smarter than the enemy and survive to make it home to your loved ones.

The seminar is open to students past & present, friends, family and work colleagues.

Cover charge is $70 per person.

Sign up forms are at reception or reply to this email, comment on this post or direct message us and we will book you in!

Don’t forget to share, retweet or forward this post – you don’t know who may need it!

(please allow 30mins to run over-time on the day)
