Some Background on BJJ

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art and combative sport predicated on ground fighting (ne-waza) and submission holds. It focuses on the artfulness of taking an adversary to the ground, containing one’s opponent, obtaining a dominant position, and applying a number of ways to compel them into submission via joint locks or chokeholds.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was developed around 1920 by Brazilian siblings Carlos, Oswaldo, GastãoJr., George, and Hélio Gracie, after Carlos was tutored traditional Kodokan judo by a travelling Japanese judoka, Mitsuyo Maeda, in 1917. Afterward they developed their own self- defense system along with their cousins the Machado family.

BJJ ultimately became to be its own delineated combat sport through the coinages, practices, and adaption of “Gracie” Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Judo, and became an integral martial art for contemporary MMA. BJJ revolves around the notion that a lesser, weaker person can successfully uphold him/ herself against a larger, stronger, hefty opponent by using leverage and weight distribution, taking the fight to the floor and using a opus of holds and submissions to defeat them. BJJ practice can be used for sport grappling and self- defense situations.
