Martial Arts for Adult Beginners in Sydney

A four week course in Wing Chun Kung Fu for beginners in Sydney

Have I left it too late to try martial arts?

This is one of the most common questions we are asked from adults looking to give martial arts a go. The answer is: It’s never too late to begin training in the discipline of Martial Arts.

From the point of view of martial arts as a competitive sport, at a professional level, then yes, competitively – for the martial discipline you can expect to “peak” in your mid 30’s.

But as a Sydney resident, looking to get fit, learn something you really enjoy and meet people you really like? Martial arts is a fantastic choice.

Finding the right school is the next problem. Besides “is the school in a convenient Sydney location?” The three main factors to consider are:

1: is what I’m learning practical? ie: will these fighting skills actually work if I need to use this in self defence?

2: is there a healthy balance between technical training and fitness training? Some schools will constantly over-do the technical aspects of the martial art training at the expense of a good workout. Other schools (or coaches and trainers for that matter) will prioritise a hard workout over good technique. The reality is that you need a balance of both for martial expertise. Technical skills without fitness to back it up will get you into a LOT of trouble. Likewise, great fitness and terrible technique will leave you with a false sense of security and again, could get you into some serious trouble.

3: is the culture at this martial arts gym healthy? ie: is it a school of bullies and thugs? Or is it a school that nurtures and gets the best out of its members?

At Red Boat Kung Fu Sydney, we pride ourselves on teaching you pressure tested techniques and training you like an athlete. You may have zero interest in competition, but you WILL train like a martial artist. And a martial artist is an all-round athlete – fit, strong, powerful, agile, fast and flexible. Day by day, you will get better at all of these things.

Our four week introductory course in the martial art of Wing Chun Kung Fu starts on the first Wednesday night of every month at our Sydney school on the borders of Redfern, Alexandria and Waterloo.

You will learn foundational footwork, blocks, punches and kicks, plus strategy and tactics.

Forms are a big part of training (referred to as Kata in Karate and Patterns in Taekwondo), so you will also learn the beginnings of the first Wing Chun form – Sil Lum Tao.

We will also typically cover at least one choke option within the course!

And of course a great introduction to training for martial fitness!

If you are new to Martial Arts or new to Wing Chun Kung Fu and live in Sydney this is a great course to start with.
