Traditional Wing Chun Classes in Redfern

Greetings…

We had a great week last week which was capped off with an old school drilling class on Saturday.

Tonight we will start with a drilling class, plus detailing the last sections of the Chum Kil and Bil Jee forms. Afterwards, a full run through of both forms. On the Wooden Dummy we will work backwards from the last set, because the last 3 or 4 are almost always the least polished, so let’s refine those dummy sets.

We will finish off the class with Chi Sau! Including a reaping sweep to arm bar technique and one of Frances’ flow drills. So we will need to be totally focused for the evening!

See you there.

Regards,

Sifu

What is Chi Sau?

Chi Sau, or‘ Sticky Hands’, is a Wing Chun training activity aimed to develop close range combat expertise. In close range conflict, your capacity to perceive an incoming strike, for example a punch and respond by instinct is greatly lowered, which is where the attributes evolved through Chi Sau relate.

The goal of Chi Sau is to anticipate through touch any change in an opponent’s body position which indicates an incoming attack. Training the arms to have a mind of their own allows a Wing Chun exponent to intuitively disrupt an opponent’s structure and douse their capability to bear force.

Hi all its been great fun training all the new stuff but we simply cannot ignore the basics ..Grading will be upon us in no time and  every level needs to square the game away this i understand …but what got you to were you are is your foundation skills and everyone needs to take a trip down memory lane and embrace that…as the mysteries of Wing Unfold im finding inspiration in skills we can take for granted ..Blocks that are also Strikes ..Footwork creating perfect angle line and length …pummeling Chi Sau to win the clinch…Wooden Dummy our ancient Clinching tool …and much much more would not have evolved without the foundation…think of it as consolidation of skills  because the other option is degradation of skills …and that is not going to happen…so lets rebuild our game from the ground up…and reach new levels …see you the mat …Sifu

Some Background on BJJ

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art and combative sport predicated on ground fighting (ne-waza) and submission holds. It focuses on the artfulness of taking an adversary to the ground, containing one’s opponent, obtaining a dominant position, and applying a number of ways to compel them into submission via joint locks or chokeholds.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was developed around 1920 by Brazilian siblings Carlos, Oswaldo, GastãoJr., George, and Hélio Gracie, after Carlos was tutored traditional Kodokan judo by a travelling Japanese judoka, Mitsuyo Maeda, in 1917. Afterward they developed their own self- defense system along with their cousins the Machado family.

BJJ ultimately became to be its own delineated combat sport through the coinages, practices, and adaption of “Gracie” Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Judo, and became an integral martial art for contemporary MMA. Controlling bodies resemblant as the IBJJF work worldwide, and set the rules and norms to be held in sport BJJ competitions.

BJJ revolves around the notion that a lesser, weaker person can successfully uphold him/ herself against a larger, stronger, hefty opponent by using leverage and weight distribution, taking the fight to the floor and using a opus of holds and submissions to defeat them. BJJ practice can be used for sport grappling and self- defense situations. (4) Sparring, generally referred to as” rolling”within the BJJ circles, and real-time drilling plays a large part in training and the exponent’s development. BJJ can also be used as a system of promoting physical fitness, nurturing character, and as a way of life.
